The science program is an integrated, coordinated program designed for middle school students. It reflects the NYS learning standards in science and prepares students to explain the most important ideas about our physical setting and our living environment. Science process skills are learned through a series of discoveries in various content themes by participating in “hands-on” science activities and learn science by the inquiry model.
The fifth grade introduces students to the science process skills of observation, inference, identifying and controlling variables, predicting and hypothesizing. These skills are then applied through extended study of science topics such as biomes, simple machines, mammals and aviation.
Building on the skill learned in fifth grade, sixth grade science explores areas within earth, physical, chemical and life sciences. Units of study include weather and climate, energy, ecosystems, the earth surface and the solar system.
