Welcome

Transportation is a privilege, and student safety is our goal. The following school bus rules have been developed to ensure the safety of all riders. Please review the following with your children. Additional bus safety and transportation information is provided in parent and student handbooks.

  1. The student should be ready to get on the bus on time and follow the driver’s directions.

  2. The Code of Conduct is in effect for students while riding on a District bus.

  3. Students denied the privilege of transportation due to behavior are expected to be transported by a parent/guardian and attend school.

Safety & Conduct Reminders:

A printable version of these reminders can be found by clicking here.

  • Please have students dressed appropriately for the weather.

  • Be OUTSIDE waiting for the bus 5 minutes before your scheduled pick up time, and be aware buses may

arrive late due to traffic, weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

  • Students should be 15 feet (10 big steps) from the road and be visible to the driver.

  • If there are several students at your stop, they should all be out and ready to get on the bus at

the SAME TIME, never one at time.

  • If your student is in a car seat, an adult will need to assist them with buckling morning and

    afternoon.

  • Encourage students not to play or run around at the bus stop.

  • Food, drinks, candy, and gum are NOT permitted on the bus with the exception of a water-tight

bottle that is to remain in their backpack until they have been released from the bus. (Hot liquids

and spills are a safety risk.)

  • All items brought on the bus must fit in a backpack; skateboards and fishing poles are not allowed

    on the bus.

  • Students should quickly find their seat, stay in that seat, and remain clear of the aisles.

  • Students should remain seated until the bus has come to a complete stop, and stay behind the

white line until it is safe to exit the bus.

  • While helping students cross, parents should make sure to follow the procedure to safely cross, as

one day your students will be doing this on their own. Modeling the behavior is the best way to

    communicate the correct way.

  • Parents please go over these safety rules with your student.

    • No headphones or cellphone use while boarding or exiting the bus

    • Stay 15 feet (10 big steps) from the road and bus before crossing

    • Make sure you can see the driver and the driver can see you

    • Watch for the drivers signal to cross

      • REMEMBER: The horn means DANGER - go back to where you started**

    • Keep all belongings in your backpack when exiting and loading the bus - never stop to pick up

      fallen items!

    • Stop at the edge of the bus and look left and right before continuing to cross.

    • When walking away from the bus make sure to continue away from the road directly to their home.

DO NOT check mail or take trash cans from the road - wait until the bus has left.

  • Bus drivers will NOT honk the horn to signal they are at your stop. The horn is only to signal

    danger.

  • Students may not play music; all electronics must be silenced while on the bus. The use of

headphones is required. Loud and inappropriate noise can be distracting to the driver.

  • No foul or inappropriate language is to be used on the bus. Keep conversations respectable and

    appropriate.

  • Students Pre-K to 4ᵗʰ grade will NOT be let off the bus without the driver seeing an adult. If

visual contact is not made. the student will return to school where parents may pick them up.

  • Drivers CANNOT accept notes with bus changes. If a change is needed, please complete a

    transportation form and

turn it to the school office for approval. (See form further down the page)

What Can Be Brought on the Bus?

A printable version of these reminders can be found by clicking here.

The New York State Department of Transportation and federal regulations PROHIBIT bringing large items and musical instruments on school buses. All items that the child will be bringing to school should be packed in a carrying case, such as a tote bag or backpack, which must be small enough to be held on the student’s lap. Large items and food for class parties may not be transported by school bus.

Acceptable Items if Held on Lap:

  • INTRUMENTS: Piccolo, oboe, flute, soprano clarinet, bassoon, snare drum, alto saxophone, French horn, trombone, trumpet, violin, and viola.

  • SPORTS GEAR: Lacrosse sticks that are less than 44 inches in length are allowed on the bus so long as they are carried inside a carrying bag/case. Lacrosse sticks that are larger than 44 inches are not allowed on the bus, parents should make other arrangements for transportation.

  • SPORTS GEAR: Soccer balls, basketballs, baseballs, softballs, or any other type of ball are not allowed on the bus unless they are secured inside a backpack or sports bag.

Large Items Not Accepted as Lap Items:

  • INSTRUMENTS NOT ALLOWED: Including, but are not limited to: Alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contra bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, cello, guitar, tenor saxophone, tuba, baritone horn, string bass, large school projects, skateboards, bikes, fishing poles, skis and poles, and sleds.

  • NOT ALLOWED: Including, but not limited to: Any weapons, glass containers, and aerosol cans, pets or any live animals other than guide dog, hearing dog or service dog properly harnessed, accompanying a person with a disability.

Guidelines for Early Dismissal

  1. Special circumstances in the home (working parents, baby-sitter directions, etc.) should be reported at the beginning of the school year. Secondary children should know where to go in the neighborhood in the event no one is at their house. Our drivers require visual sight of an adult before dropping off students in grades PreK to 4.

  2. Please help keep the District phone lines open during early dismissals. We ask that you have an alternative plan in place.

  3. Please do not drive to the school during inclement weather or a school-closing emergency. School driveways must be kept clear to allow access by school buses and emergency vehicles.

  4. Students normally using school bus transportation will be released to their parents only after being properly signed out at the school office. Children will NOT be allowed to leave with other persons without a written release from parents.

Late Bus

Eighth period ends at 2:35 p.m. Students who remain after this time must do so under the supervision of a teacher. The teacher will obtain passes from the office for those who wish to ride the late bus. No one will be permitted to board a late bus without a bus pass.

Requests for Transportation for Non-public Schools

The parent/guardian of a parochial or private school child residing in the District who desires their child to be transported to a parochial, private or charter school outside of the District during the next school year, must submit a written request to the Board no later than April 1 of the preceding year, or within 30 days of moving into the District.

School Closing Information

Our goal is to provide clear and timely communication to ensure the safety of your children. The Lyndonville Central School District may occasionally cancel classes or delay the opening of school due to inclement weather or other emergencies. The decision to open or close schools will be based on a careful analysis of information received from District transportation officials and local law enforcement partners.

Special Bus Requests

In cases of extreme circumstances, it may be necessary for a student to ride on a bus other than the regularly assigned bus. In such situations, students must present an Official Dismissal Change form to the PreK-6 principal’s secretary or the 7-12 principal’s secretary from the parent/guardian stating the reason and destination. Building principals are the only ones authorized to change a bus assignment.
