May update

May 7, 2021

Dear LCS Families and Community,

The month of May has arrived, and hopefully, nice weather for spring sports, concerts, celebrations, assemblies and graduation—all those wonderful events and rites of passages that were sadly eliminated or modified last year in the midst of the COVID shutdown.

I write this update with a great deal of optimism, as the restrictions are loosening, which means more opportunities for our students.  We have released graduation information to our students and parents earlier this week, and as it stands now, we are planning a single outdoor graduation ceremony on Thursday, June 24th, with two rain dates on Friday the 25th and Saturday the 26th.    Spring concert season information is also being released, please check our Facebook and website for details information regarding dates, times, locations, and any restrictions we need to follow.

There will be a meeting for parents and families on Monday, May 10th in the Library to review slight modifications to our Re-Opening plan.  I referenced these changes in an update and letter I sent out Monday afternoon.  Just in case, here is that letter I sent out on Monday via e-mail and text:  May 10 meeting information.  If you plan on attending in person, please RSVP to Lori Lamay at Llamay@lcsdk12.org.  Finally, here is the link for the livestream of the meeting and the credentials to log in:

Monday, May 10th at 7:00 pm is also the Annual Budget Presentation for the 2021-22 school year.  As you may recall from earlier updates, this was an especially challenging year given the economic conditions.  The annual Budget Vote and Board Elections will be held on Tuesday, May 18 from 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm in the auditorium foyer.

Our Educator and Staff Member of the Year process is moving along quite nicely, and we have some wonderful candidates who have been nominated.  We look forward to announcing this year’s honorees at the June 14th Board of Education meeting.

Information regarding the June schedule for students will be released in the next few weeks, and as a reminder, there is NO school on Friday, May 28th in addition to the annual Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 31.  Don’t forget to look for the flags on our school grounds courtesy of the Yates Library, as a moving tribute to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for country.

Yesterday, we celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day with pizza donated and prepared by Dubby’s Wood Fire Pizza.  This year, especially, please join me in recognizing and thanking our Lyndonville teachers for embracing the challenges of teaching in the COVID-19 world.  When the year began, I gave each faculty and staff member a small bag of coffee beans that paired with a story I told about coffee beans and adapting to change.  Long story short: when coffee beans are introduced to hot water, they embrace the challenge and improve the water and conditions.  I am so proud to continue to report that all of our staff members have truly been “coffee beans” this year and we are so appreciative.  Bravo and job well done!

I look forward to seeing more of our parents and community members during this spring season!

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Jason Smith, Superintendent of Schools
