Memorial Day

May 21, 2021

Dear Lyndonville Families and Community,

Are you sensing it?   I am.  Are you optimistic?   I am.  Do things feel more normal?  I think so.  Here’s why:

  • We held our first in person and live concert this past Tuesday night, where our students performed in person and in front of a live audience!  As our music teachers told the crowd, not every school has been able to have their music groups gather and play—what a joyous and welcome sound we heard Tuesday night.
  • Spring sports are alive and well—remember we missed them entirely last year!  Our teams are off to a tremendous start, and congratulations to Baseball Coach Shane Price on win 250 against Notre Dame this week.
  • Speaking of baseball, those of you who attended our first Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony on Sunday afternoon (also in person!) enjoyed a special afternoon.  We celebrated the wonderful accomplishments of some of Lyndonville’s finest student-athletes and coaches in a very moving and touching program.  Thank you to our Athletic Director Jim Zeliff and Lyndonville Sports Boosters for their efforts and leadership in making this program successful.  We look forward to embracing this new tradition.
  • Our annual budget vote was held this week, also in-person!  On behalf of the District, I would like to thank our community and voters for their overwhelmingly positive support of our budget for the 21-22 school year.  As I have mentioned before, this was an especially challenging budget year.  We are now beginning to focus on the wise and judicious efforts and planning required to allocate the additional federal funds to improve programming and financial status.  Please be on the lookout for a public plan that needs to be posted by July 1 on our website.
  • Our dedicated and talented Pre-K Team, under the leadership of Principal Elissa Smith, is planning outreach efforts for next year’s program.  I attended one of their planning meetings this week, and we have some wonderful opportunities for our younger families, including Boost Bags, summer programming, and a July 4th information booth.
  • Did I say July 4th?  Yes, the District is once again pleased to partner with our friends at the Lyndonville Lions Club to host part of this wonderful day, including a concert, fireworks, and a take out chicken barbeque.
  • Planning efforts are well underway for such annual events as Top Ten Dinners, graduation, moving up ceremonies, and athletic recognitions.

Finally, I want to take this opportunity to recognize those who have given their lives in service of our great country this upcoming Memorial Day weekend.  When I was a child, I would listen with wonder and awe as my grandfather so humbly shared his stories about serving on the U.S.S. Case in the Pacific Ocean, when the U.S. was at Iwo Jima in World War II.   Upon his passing, I was presented with his flag at his funeral, which is proudly on display in my home, along with a picture of his ship and crewmates.

Please take some time this this upcoming weekend and admire the beautiful and moving flags that will be on display on school grounds by the Yates Library, placed there by the dedicated library volunteers, and take a moment to ponder the service of our military.

Jason Smith, Superintendent of Schools
